Opportunities for Lay Ministries
Vestry:
Elected parishioners serve three-year terms on the
vestry overseeing finances, facilities, parish policies, programs, and
personnel. Two members of the vestry are elected as Wardens of the parish. The vestry meets monthly.
Christian Education:
The parish conducts regular Sunday School on site, year-round. One paid teacher and a number of volunteers lead the Sunday School
Bible discussions, craft projects, liturgical lessons, and the annual
Christmas pageant.
Adult Education: Traditionally, the rector has conducted weekly adult Bible
study or discussion groups. A Bible study group for men and women meets
regularly during the summer months. Rectors and others qualified as mentors
conduct the Education for Ministry program, sponsored by The University of
the South (Sewanee). This is a four-year, 39-weeks per year program that
takes place between September and June.
Outreach: A number of programs throughout the year offer parishioners the
opportunity for community involvement. Some of these are the collection and
distribution of food to the needy, visitation and socialization for shut ins
and the elderly, an "Angel Tree" program designed to distribute clothing and
gifts to community members in need at Christmas, lay Eucharistic ministry,
and participation in conducting Sunday services at area nursing homes on a
rotating basis with other churches. The Stroud Fund accepts requests from the community, and meets quarterly to vote on the distribution of funds.
Newsletter: The parish publishes "The Harbor Chart," a monthly
newsletter informing parish members of church activities and events, issues
of concern, opportunities for ministry, and containing messages of
inspiration and challenge from the rector and wardens.
