A BLAST FROM THE PAST!
Not newsworthy, but certainly noteworthy, is this message for the present age coming to you from the first century AD.
"And for those who in the present age are rich, command them not to be haughty, or to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but rather on God who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share, thus storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of the life that really is life." 1 Timothy 6:17-19
Note particularly the writerıs concerns about present age issues: self-esteem, uncertainty in the stock market, generosity, and laying a foundation for the future.
Please heed this ancient passage from, some might say, an irrelevant old story book when you contemplate the recent stewardship mailing to the parish, which included a little folder entitled "Funding the Present and Future of The Parish of St. Mary and St. Jude."
Thank you. The treasure you help us store up for our parish will be treasure you store up for yourself.

JOYFUL IS WHO JOYFULLY DOES: Fifth in a series of "Profiles in Ministry"
At an early age, mainly because her mother made sure of it, Roz Rea dutifully attended the Episcopal Church in which she was baptized Trinity Church, Concord, Massachusetts. She went to Sunday school, regular services, sang in the junior choir, and was confirmed in her early teens.
Years later, after she was married and living in Virginia, Roz joined a small church that shared a rector with two other churches. Several Sundays a month when the rector was on the road, Roz and a few others took turns ministering to their congregation by reading the service.
When she moved to Mount Desert Island in 1986, she joined St. Maryıs and continued her participation in Episcopal Church life. (I think Roz actually tried to re-define "participation.") She served several terms on the Vestry. She became the parishıs first female Senior Warden and served two terms, 1989-91 and 1999-2001. She was a one-person Stewardship Committee from 1997 to 2001, was a delegate to Diocesan Conventions in 1990 and 2001, and served on the 1996-7 Search and Profile committees. She is presently on the Stewardship Committee, Renovation Fund Committee, and Chair of the Building and Grounds Committee.
"I believe our congregation is
entering a new phase of
increased involvement with each other,
and of increased acceptance."
Roz Rea
Of all of her church "duties," Roz says that she has most enjoyed her current position on the Building and Grounds Committee. This is partly because of her love for history and historic preservation, but more importantly for the challenges and opportunities that have helped her grow personally. Roz admits that she would not have taken on any of her roles had she not first been asked. But she has learned to give of herself more joyfully as she has felt more accepted.
When someone asks you to become involved in the church, just say "yes." Like Roz, you may be motivated initially by a sense of duty, but you will soon discover, joyfully, that participation leads to personal growth, acceptance, and improved relationships with your fellow parishioners and with God.

CELEBRATION OF NEW MINISTRY SCHEDULED
Bishop Knudsen has set the date for the installation of David J. Lucey as the new rector of The Parish of St. Mary and St. Jude. The ceremony will be presided over by the Bishop and will take place at St. Maryıs-by-the-Sea (weather permitting) at 4PM on Sunday, November 10th. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall details to be announced. Please plan to attend this festive occasion to welcome our new rector and his family. Seasonal members are encouraged to show their support with cards and letters. Reverend Lucey is looking forward to being with us, and is already diligently working on the service.
TRANSITION TEAM IDENTIFIED
The team of Sally Merchant, Ellen Kappes, Martha Bucklin, Jean Fernald, and Michael Dennis has been named to provide support for the new rector and his family as they make the transition from Bedford, New York to Northeast Harbor, Maine. Team members will be there to help the Luceys get properly introduced and integrated into the parish family and the larger community.
THANKS KATE GILE!
We all owe Kate a pat on the back, a kiss on the cheek, a heartfelt "well done" for shouldering the considerable administrative workload of the parish almost single-handedly in this limbo between rectors. Next time youıre in the neighborhood, stop by the office and say thanks in person. If you canıt think of anything else to say, just smile. Youıll make her day.
THANKS, DAVID RENAULT!
The parish wishes to express our deep gratitude to David Renault for his twenty years of service as Sexton of the church, chapel, and parish hall at St. Maryıs. David followed in the footsteps of his father, who was Sexton before him, bringing to St. Maryıs valuable historical knowledge and continuity of tradition. Thank you David for your ministry to this church. We wish you Godspeed and smooth sailing on the remainder of your lifeıs journey.
THANKS VISITING MINISTERS!
The parish gratefully acknowledges those generously talented men and women of the cloth who conducted services at St. Maryıs from the conclusion of The Reverend Frances Coxıs interim ministry and the beginning of The Reverend David Luceyıs settled ministry. We wish to thank The Reverend Edwin Garrett, The Reverend Angus Davis, The Reverend Vesta Kowalski, The Reverend Robert Raymond, and The Right Reverend Alden Hathaway who also presided at two marriages in the month of September.
CENTENNIAL BOXED NOTE CARDS STILL AVAILABLE (Christmas is coming!)
The Parish Office has a supply of these beautiful, full-color boxed cards commemorating the centennial of St. Maryıs-by-the-Sea. They are $10 a box of five cards and envelopes. What a thoughtful stocking stuffer for friends and members of our parish family with fond memories and a soft spot in their hearts for our beautiful and historic stone church! Write, phone or e-mail the office to order your cards. Literally, a once in a lifetime opportunity.
QUILT RAFFLE DRAWING
If you're reading this before October 13th, thereıs still time to buy raffle tickets for Sheila, Marion, and Phyllisı gorgeous quilt. You may have seen it at the Summer Fair and wishfully pictured it adorning your bed. Well... as they say in the lottery business, "Ya gotta play to win." So stop by the parish office or call and buy your tickets. (Note the plural.) The drawing will take place Sunday, October 13th.
ONWARD EPISCOPAL CHURCH WOMEN (and men)!
The ECW held a BYO Luncheon meeting (desserts provided) on September 30th. The entire parish was invited and encouraged to attend. The agenda included getting the buildings ready for winter, cleaning and storage issues, Altar Guild issues, status of the parish cookbook, what the ECW plans to do with money from the Summer Sale, Sunday School, coffee hours, upcoming events, and whatever other issues folks brought to the table. The meeting was an opportunity for parishioners to speak out about their own ideas and suggestions for improvements in our parish life. We will report meeting results in the next edition of the newsletter.
